At least SGI's port of lpd is >buggy and unreliable. irix (the os you'll find sgi ship) comes with a berkeley lpd system. i'm told it works - i know people who use it. be warned, how ever, that being derived from the bsd lpd source, it comes with the same set of bugs, and you should get the patches from sgi to fix the numerous security problems that have plagued lpd.
