Do I need to go to version > 1.1? Sounds like you haven't added ppp support to your kernel. You need to add a line like: pseudo-device ppp 2 to your kernel configuration. I have had pppd working on both FreeBSD-1.0.2 and FreeBSD-1.1 so you shouldn't need to upgrade.
