Well, the system compiles the kernel *much* faster on my system.  Generally
it is faster.  It is possible perhaps that there is something different about
your hardware that we haven't considered.  I don't have an answer -- more
information.  Obviously you are seeing a difference.  How much memory do
you have?  What type of disk drives do you have??  Ohhhh.... I'll bet I know...
 
First, vi does start more slowly -- it is a new version and it has some strange
timing characteristics... Secondly, the new system uses gcc2 (much, much slower)
 (Could that partially be the problem?????)
