Trying out X or for that matter windows 3.1 with a trident vga card is torture. Some S3 chipsets are more than an order of magnititute faster than the trident. Since you are just going to play with X, I suggest just download all of XFree86 and give it a try after a little while you can delete portions that you don't want. What I do is I download packages such as XFree86 over night while I sleep. There is a TinyX configuration floating around with the absolute minimum disk space requirements and it is about 3 to 4MBs of disk space.
