If a boot floppy was written to boot from lots of devices, and a CDROM was selected, the primary/secondary boot code on the CD is going to have to figure out where the OS is. This means that it would need to know how to interrogate the installation floppy (and find out what was booted). The only (IMHO) other strategy would be to take a look at every device on the machine, searching for the running code.... but we all know how dangerous this can be.
