I use a 486-33 VLB board with a IDE ST1144 drive as my boot/usr and a
Maxtor 213 w/Adaptec 1542B as my /home. I also have an S3 VLB viedo
board and run XFree86 2.1.1.

When building X and during some other task the IDE disk light sometimes
goes solid and the machine freezes for about 5 seconds. It sometimes
recovers from this and continues but other times it halt for good.

I also suffer from the segmentation faults when building kernel
problems.

I used to not have such problems until recently when I 1) upgraded from
1.1B to 1.1R and 2) installed the S3 board (I used to run an old Diamond
Speedstar).

No twiddling of the memory waitstates and bus parameters appears to make
any difference for me.

If anyone can help (or if you just want to be sympathetic) please send
me some e-mail. I like to hear from you :-)

regards,
-Jim.
