A good solution is to install the Samba SMB server on the
FreeBSD machine. Samba is an SMB server for Unix that
works seamlessly with Windows for Workgroups and other SMB
based networks (Lanman, WinNT, etc).

Together with the MS TCP/IP (Daytona winsock) you can configure
Windows for Workgroups to use the Unix machine's printer as if
it were a normal network printer.

For example, fred is your Windows for Workgroups machine and martha
is your FreeBSD machine.

On fred, you add an entry to the hosts file for martha with its IP address.

On martha you compile and install the Samba SMB server, configure
a printer resource (call it laser) to use lpr in the correct manner
and we're ready to go!

Then on fred, install a network printer called \\martha\laser. In fact,
at this point you can even mount a drive on fred called \\martha\public
or whatever you want to configure Samba to provide. Samba does both
file and printer serving.

Now you can hop onto fred any time and print anything you like :-)

I am really impressed with Samba, it has few limitations in that
the Broswer feature of WfWg isn't implemented yet, but its still
under development :-)

Samba can be found on nimbus.anu.edu.au:/pub/tridge/server/tarred/....

Cheers

Leigh
