grrrr I have the same problem. though I am running FreeBSD 1.0R, and I get
out of it by clicking left-button on my mouse and using "delete" command to
delete the login window (hence logging off). after this procedure the
machine seems to be fine.

I have found that the lockup is due to the fact that the system reports
something to the console (like "su"-ing) and the
first-time-login-after-reboot works fine UNTIL you try "su" or alike.

also I get lockups after long periods of login - like if I leave it over the
weekend :)
