I have been running FreeBSD 1.1 for less than 24 hours but I have 7 years of UNIX experience under Sys V. Please forgive me. Son, for running SYSV for 7 years, you are forgiven! Espiritu santo, etc etc. Now, it looks to me like your problem is simply that you don't have gettys running on those new virtual ttys. You have to have entries in your /etc/ttys for the new ttyv<n> devices or syscons won't switch to them. Check out the syscons section in our FAQ - very useful in times like this! :-) In FreeBSD 1.1.5 syscons will be the default (with 3 vty's) so it should be more obvious, hopefully. freebsd.cdrom.com:~ftp/pub/FreeBSD/FAQ Jordan
