No, it's more like the Berkeley one :-)

The vi that comes with FreeBSD 1.1 is nvi, from the 4.4BSD distribution.
It has been completely reimplemented from scratch by Keith Bostic at 
UCB.

It has a number of handy features that normal vi doesn't have.  Check
out the vi (1) manpage for more info.

The FreeBSD 1.0 vi was actually "elvis" by Steve Kirkendall.  It's
another complete rewrite with no SysV contamination, but it has a number
of "flavour" differences that some vi users don't like much.

Myself?  I'm an Emacs man, so I don't care which one is on my system :-)
