And of course I did. The installation kernel nicely installs my card (on IO 
300) as ed1 - this thing is cleverer than the install.note suggests...

No I'm going to explore how I can create a filesystem on another disk
from the stuff the boot-disks install... I still hope to find the answer 
in the faqs...
