I'd find that : extremely annoying. It irritates me enough to remember where ping : is on FreeBSD, SunOS, ULTRIX and OSF. If things were in a different : place for the same OS depending on where I got it from I think I'd : start smashing up my machines :-) Not only files are in different places in diferent releases. Some package maintainers configure/compile/install nearly all of their packages themselves, other maintainers get binary packages via ftp. Another problem is sometimes, that communication packages come from different people, so the handling "where to put lockfiles" for a modem device or so isn't unique ...
