You have to use the cua0? devices, I use:
Logitech	"/dev/cua00"
BaudRate	9600
SampleRate	150

This with the sio driver...
Another good idea is to watch debugging output od the X server:

When using csh as login shell:
	startx >& x11.log

After terminating X you can watch debugging output.

Or running the server with the probeonly option ...
X -probeonly >& x11.log
