Some time ago I was trying to install FreeBSD-1.0 on my system (i386DX/25 8M, Adaptec AHA 1542C, Maxtor MXT-1240S) and was getting (I think) the exact same error. After a lot of work with one of the developers, we gave up and I went to NetBSD-0.9.
