Date: 17 Jun 1994 13:17:44 GMT Organization: $HOME, D-41469 Neuss Lines: 55 Message-ID: <2ts7qa$3el@knobel.knirsch.de> NNTP-Posting-Host: knobel.knirsch.de Summary: when opening a new xterm I'm in a previously elm/vi session Keywords: xfree86 freebsd X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL2] Hi ! Some weeks ago somebody else posted the same misbehaviour ... What happened ... I'm running FreeBSD-1.1R and XFree86-2.1 from the FreeBSD 1.1 CD. I'm running fvwm from the same CD ... I was reading news in a xterm session using rtin. Then I wanted to add somebody to my elm alias database via X11 cut+paste ... I invoked (via fvwm button pop up menue) a "xterm -e elm" session. I tried to invoke the alias menue using 'a'. But I only got strange output after pressing key and RETURN severyl times. I pressed 'm' RETUREN to try if sending mail would work ... Vi was invoked, but not in full screen mode ... Instead of this I moved the contents of the screen up line by line, when pressing return several times ... Since I couldn't get out of the session, I *killed* the xterm window with the elm/vi session within !!! I tried to open a new elm session in a xterm session, but the same bad results. After that I tried to open only a xterm session and got a shell prompt. But when pressing RETURN, I got the feeling that I was in the same elm/vi editing session, that I killed before with the complete xterm !!!! And voila :q! terminated the vi session and I got a working xterm session !!! How can this happen, that a killed editing session from a xterm window is lying around there and again gets active after invoking a completely new xterm ??? Here an extract from my fvwm setup file, so you can see, how I invoke xterm and elm: Popup "Utilities" Title "Utilities" Exec "Large Xterm" exec xterm -fn 10x20 -sb & Exec "News" exec xterm -fn 10x20 -T News -n Tin -e /usr/local/bin/rtin & Exec "Mail" exec xterm -fn 10x20 -T Mail -n Elm -e /usr/local/bin/elm & EndPopup Does somebody have an idea ?!
