If you look at comp.os.386bsd.development, I've just posted some
information from the German magazine c't which suggests that the
CD-ROM isn't bootable at all; you need to fire up DOS (Diagnostic
Operating Services?) first, and then you can load a DOS bootstrap
which will boot from the CD-ROM. Not at all as clever as we had
thought.
