I use USR Sporsters on my FreeBSD BBS system.  The only change I made to
the factory defaults was to put dip switch 5 up (auto answer mode).  The
dip switches look like the following:

     UUDUUUUD
     12345678 

I also made the necessary changes to the /etc/ttys to run a getty on each
of the serial lines.  Blast me some email if you want more info about
that.
