well i tried the patch, but it was choking when it couldn't find files
-- obviously a lot since i only have src/sys installed.  i couldn't
figure out how to get it to ignore files that weren't there.

i know -- i've tried this before and trashed my system.
unfortunately, my tape backup also had errors -- a really sucky
combination.
