In addition though, I take the belts-and-braces approach of configuring the modems to drop DTR on loss of carrier and to also drop the connection if the line is idle for a certain amount of time. Almost all modern modems have these facilities and it may help you to take advantage of these in addition to an idle-time monitor. M.
