Thanks for the advice Steve, but I'm afraid that didn't work either :-(
It produced the message 'Device not configured' when trying to do the
comcontrol. I have double checked that I have recompiled the correct kernel
with the OPTION as specified above, but its still not working.

I'm afraid that I shall have to give up and get on with Linux instead. Its a
shame because I think that FreeBSD seems to be a good o/s to use, but if I
can't use my modem with it then I'm afraid that it is not for me :-(
