Thanks for the clarification; I guess I was thinking that the
multitudes of changes spread throughout the system would be critical
to someone trying to *run* 4.4-lite, but not to everyone that just
wanted to take a look and learn something about it....

Agreed...   I just hope replicated-ftp happens sooner than the several
weeks it would take to trickle it out through c.s.unix.  ;-)
