As far as I understand it, NetBSD was originally Net/2 code. It's goal is similar functionality on as many architectures as possible. i.e. it currently runs on m68k, SPARC, MIPS, NS32k and x86 architectures. It is now mostly BSD 4.4lite + fixes. FreeBSD was originally Net/2 code. It's mail goal is the most kick butt x86 BSD on the planet. It too is integrating alot of BSD 4.4-lite. 386BSD is the old stuff from which the other two were originally decended. If you want to a fully functional 4.4 BSD system then NetBSD or FreeBSD is what you want, depending on if you are x86 based, FreeBSD, or other architecture based, NetBSD. NetBSD currently has running ports for Sun 4c, Sun 3, Amiga, Mac, x86, pmax, ns32k and a vax port is rumored to be in the works as well. BSD 4.4-lite isn't a complete system in and of itself. It needs some holes filled in by either NetBSD or FreeBSD. -Rob
