I am using PC-NFS v5.1 (SunSelect) on an MS-DOS machine (name = "alif") to
mount an NFS file system running on FreeBSD (name = "center"). I am able to
ping, telnet and ftp but mounting is having problems.

Whenever I try to mount from alif (the PC), a mountd process is created on
center. A moment later another mountd is created. Within a minute or two
several dozen mountd's have been created. Pretty soon, the table is full and I
can't even reboot or halt. In the meantime, on alif, there are no messages as
to why the mounting failed. (At one time I saw a "Can't register..." error
message, but I have not seen one today.)

Any ideas on what is causing the proliferation of mountd's?
