I was finally able to get FreeBSD to reinstall. When it asked me if I wanted 
to write over existing partitions I said no. I then accepted the defaults for 
the partition sizes. This failed. I redid it, only telling it *not* to offset 
the first partition by one.

This has worked without any problems at all.
