'Bout time somebody reported that. :) : I : would like to run PPP, but I am having trouble getting the thing : started. : If I try to run /usr/libexec/pppd I get the message: : Sorry - system does not support PPP : Is this true? It was my understanding that PPP was supported. I read : the man page for pppd and checked all the faqs, but I could find no : mention of anything special I had to do to get pppd running. : I have done very little configuration of my machine, but there : shouldn't be that much necessary. I created /etc/hosts and edited the : various other 'etc' files. I created a /etc/ppp directory but have : put nothing in it as of yet as I am trying to run pppd on the command : line. : Oh yeah, if it makes a difference, I am trying to do this over a modem : (/dev/tty00) using kermit. : Am I missing something blatantly obvious here or what? : -Steve And the answer is: yes, you are missing something blatantly obvious. Congratuations and see you next week on... What? Oh. You want to know the rest. The supplied GENERICAH and GENERICBT don't have PPP turned on. You need to add the line 'pseudo-device ppp 1' to your kernel config file and recompile. You can make that 'pseudo device ppp 2' if you want two PPP interfaces. You can also remove the line that says 'pseudo-devicel sl 2' if you want to get rid of SLIP at the same time (if you decide that you don't need it). Yes, that means you need to install the kernel sources. No, I'm not going to tell you how to build a new kernel: that should be blatantly obvious. :) Now where did I put that Turtle Wax... -Bill -- _ /\ _ Join the / \_/\_/ \_/\_/ \ .----.
