g++ 2.5.8 is so buggy that it has no prayer of compiling OI.  It dies
in several places.

g++ isn't based at all on AT&T's compiler.  It implments all the
desired features that you'd want, but templates and template matching
are a little flakey for extreme cases.

I'd go with the 2.4.5 compiler until the 2.6.x compiler is released,
which is supposed to be soon.
