I run the following program as part of a "menu option" selected by ipick:
echo "Enter pattern for $(basename $2):" && read regexp_pattern && echo $regexp_
pattern >> $dlpatdir/regexp_match

Problem is, the read statement tends not to understand any kind of
backspace character (this is running under XFree86-1.3, under xterm).

It's very annoying.  What is the problem?  What is the fix?
