Oh, no ruffled feathers here.  He did give me that answer I wanted,
after all ;)

Oh, I started the idiot thing.  I was an idiot for not remembering that
MS-DOS tolerates all sorts of hardware problems that a real OS won't.  

But, now things are working (even X, although that wasn't as easy as it
should have been either, but such is life) and I'm happy as the
proverbial clam at high tide.
