Dennis, 

I've read Geoff's comments and there is another possibility
here. In the install script, it asks if your drive manages
bad sectors automatically. If answered yes (the default)
it leaves no room for bad144 to write out its table. Answered
No, it does. 

By taking the default yes, I generated a situation much 
like the one that you describe on the MFM drive that I'm 
using on that machine.
