Keywords: SCO package Free Interbase server

I have a 486 box that needs to become an Interbase server (Interbase is
a DB server from Borland/someone who might be buying it in the near
future). Enclosed in the Paradox for Windows Developers Kit is a copy
of the Interbase server for SCO Unix. So, I went out and bought SCO Unix,
as well as the TCP/IP and NSF packages for it - roughly $2500-$3000.
Interbase isntalled fine and appeared to work. I also needed a C compiler.
No problem, I thought. This is Unix, right? Well, a C compiler from SCO
costs about $1500 and comes bundled with some other developer stuff.

Between the problems I had installing the OS in the first place, and
how they wanted to charge me $125/call to get it installed and the hefty
price of a C compiler, I quickly lost patience and switched over to
FreeBSD 1.1 on the Walnut Creek CD-ROM, since I needed/wanted Unix on a
PC-based workstation anyway.

I'm unable to mount my SCO install disks under FreeBSD, which isn't too
surprising. I had read somewhere that the executables between them were
different, and I am looking for some confirmation on this.

I believe the install packages for SCO are object-code, and that they
need to be linked in with the system stuff.

Does anyone out there have any knowledge on whether installing SCO
packages is possible under FreeBSD, and if so, how?

Please e-mail me at tletsche@icaen.uiowa.edu, and I will post a
summary.

Thanks.
