Will that change for NetBSD 1.0? Yes, NetBSD-1.0 uses the same driver as FreeBSD, and supports the Mitsumi drive. I have one in my machine right now, and I've read several Ultrix CD-ROM's with it. >(2) Has dld been ported to either FreeBSD and/or NetBSD? Or are they pretty much > the same (I'm especially interested in POSIX pseudo tty interfaces) I know NetBSD-1.0 is very POSIX compliant in many aspects. I can't speak for FreeBSD -- but would imagine they're in similar shape. What exactly do you mean by POSIX pty's? NetBSD provides POSIX signals and termios, and (of course) the BSD model of pty's. What else is there? I wasn't aware of a specific POSIXism for pty's, themselves. >(4) On Linux, all applications running in memory multiple times share one > text (code) segment. Is this true for {Free,Net}BSD too? Yes. I explain in detail in my previous post. >(5) When are FreeBSD 2.0 and NetBSD 1.0 coming out? NetBSD-1.0 was scheduled for release end of July/beginning of August, last I heard. I can't get any more specific since I'm not a core member. FreeBSD-2.0 will be some time in coming (since 1.1.5 was just released). >(6) Do FreeBSD or NetBSD support a MSDOS filesystem such as Linux? Yes, they both do. Though I've been told it's not quite as simple to set up as the Linux version, since it uses BSD partitioning on top of the drive, with DOS underneath, where Linux works inside DOS partions. Once you get it setup, though, it's just like mounting and using a unix filesystem, except for the limitations on filenames and file links, and things like that. -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Michael L.
