Well, what do you know, it worked! I have no idea why /usr/bin/vi shouldn't work with elm (this is FreeBSD-1.1.5 BTW), but at least for me it doesn't. I guess I should have tried this earlier with elvis (which also works, incidentally), but I had forgotten elvis came with the distribution. Anyway, I'd like to thank all those who sent responses.
