Thanks to all who replied (even if the reply followed a flame ;) Now, the elm problem is really weird. I fixed the locking problem (thanks to those who told me to use fcntl locking only), but the "permission denied" error persists. Here's an outline of the problem. Run elm. Hit 'm' to mail a message. elm asks for recipient and subject. After entering those, and hitting return at the 'Cc:' prompt, it flashes the message "/tmp/snd.xxxx Permission Denied" and leaves me at the 's'end, 'e'dit, or 'f'orget it menu. First of all, /tmp has perms 1777 (i.e., rwxrwxrwt). There is space available on /tmp (about 10MB). Now, if at this point I control-z out of elmand do an ls -al of /tmp, the file /tmp/snd.xxxx exists, is owned by me, and has 0 length. So somehow, I can create but not edit the file. FWIW, it has permissions 600 (i.e., rw-------) Does anyone have an idea what I might have done to cause this? elm is installed setgid (because /var/mail is owned by bin and mode 775). I can't think of anything else that might be relevant. Please help! /bin/mail just doesn't cut it ;) Jeff -- Jeff Aitken jaitken@vt.edu A witty saying proves nothing, but saying something stupid gets peoples' attention
