In reponse to several message I have received, I should note that I did have "portmap" already started before I tried to start "nfsd" and mountd". In addition, I tried to start both daemons by hand after they failed to load. The results were similar. "mountd" said nothing and "nfsd" repeated with: Can't register with portmap.
