There are DOS versions of GNU tar (aspibin, gtak); I can use the same hardware that runs FreeBSD under MS-DOS and read/write UNIX format tar tapes using MS-DOS software. I don't know what aspibin does with hidden files or with DOS permissions, such as they are. I did use it to back up DOS machines for a while without problems. -- Michael L.
