Summary: SLIP connection works for ping/finger, not telnet, ftp

 H E L P ! !

I'm configuring a SLIP connected FreeBSD 1.1.5.1R system via direct
connection to a Xyplex MX1600 (rev 5.0.1) Terminal Server. A modem
will be involved later, but not yet.

The system can use the nameserver, ping and respond to pings, and
can respond to finger requests. Higher level functions like telnet
and ftp say they are connected, but then fail after a minute or two,
without ever showing the login or username prompts:

The telnet attempt looks like this:

zone# telnet pipedream
Trying 132.183.145.65...
Connected to pipedream.mgh.harvard.edu.
Escape character is '^]'.
<long delay>
Connection closed by foreign host.
zone#

The remote host netstat looks like this:

pipedream# netstat
Active Internet connections
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address (state)
tcp 0 0 pipedream.telnet LAT926x.1026 SYN_RCVD
	etc ...

The PC is a DECpc LPv+ 486sx/25, no ethernet card installed.

I've reconfigured the system using the "SLIP" faq from
gatekeeper.dec.com, with identical results.

Any ideas?
