I don't actually own a PCI machine. But, I've heard of several people
successfully using the bt946c with NetBSD and FreeBSD, using the
standard bt742a driver that works with virtually all the BusLogic
cards. There is also a beta driver for the NCR810 under NetBSD that
supposedly works quite well. I don't know if FreeBSD has this driver.
I can't tell you anything about Linux and PCI.
