You do have to compile your own kernel and the bootstrapld only
needs to be done if you are upgrading from a pre 1.1 system as 1.1
already has shared libs. It sounds like everything went fine. You
might want to make a change to one of your users accounts using vipw to
get your passwd file rebuilt to be on the safe side and then just
compile your own kernel, cross your fingers and reboot.

: One more thing. Am I just supposed to copy the directory /usr/src/etc to etc
: (with appropriate caution for trashing files of course) or is there more to
: do?

I usually "diff -c" all the files between /etc and /usr/src/etc
and cp appropriate files to /etc. Usually only a couple files have
changed.
