Also, let's not forget that AT&T, until about 1982, was very forward
looking in its company policy and planned for the long term.

Remember all of the interesting and useful ideas, inventions, and
advances that came from Bell Labs (3K, DSS, UNIX, etc.)

They may not have been good at any business other than telephones, but
they sure knew how to run a research lab ("here is some money, come
back when you have done something interesting with it.")
