Wolfgang Stanglmeier of PCI NCR SCSI driver fame realized what I had been doing. I had been building my kernel and naming it something other than /386bsd. I booted from this different name, but the programs that I was having trouble with were looking in the old kernel for their symbol tables. Now that I understand what is going on, everything works just fine. Thank you for your response. One other suggestion I got mentioned the math emulator as a source of potential problems. This is probably something to keep in mind as well, but my problem was the nut behind the wheel.
