Hmmm...  Just thought of something....  Does gcc use TMPDIR for the
temporary files.  I noticed that I have a:
 
export TMPDIR=/tmp
 
in my .profile...  I do notice that when I don't have my /tmp mounted
that the disk chatters much more than usual...
 
Just a thought..
