Subject: [FreeBSD-1.1.5.1] disklabel difficulties

I'm having a strange problem with my second SCSI disk. It seems that about
50% of the time I shut down the system, it loses track of the disklabel, and
gives me the dreaded 'sd1: no disklabel' message when I boot.

The first and third drives in the system have no problems. To fix the
problem, I boot to single user, mount /usr, run 'disklabel -w -r /dev/rsd1d
maxtor_7213s', then unmount /usr, sync, and halt the system. This usually
fixes it, sometimes I have to do it twice for it to take. No data loss
occurs, and fsck shows /dev/rsd1a is clean.

The disk is set up 0-201 cyl, 64 head, 32 sector translation. /dev/rsd1b
(swap) occupies cylinders 1-16, and /dev/rsd1a occupies cyl 17-201.

I beleive it's got something to do with the swap partition. The third
disk (a CDC 94171-327) works fine, but it is one large FreeBSD partition.
Both were created at the same time, using the same exact procedure. The
only thing that differs is the actual disklabel.

Any suggestions? This is starting to annoy the hell out of me.
