If you use one of the LINUX distributions (good luck deciding *which* one :)
then you'll get a complete fully functional system "right out of the box.".
Nearly every imaginable utility will be there ready to use.

If you pick *bsd, you need to pick and choose (and download separately from
the net) each utility package you think you will need.  The base *bsd system
is fully functional but lacks many useful utilities.

Only You will know which of these suits your needs.
