Trouble is that the command 'route flush' does not seem to do anything. It sounds like you're trying to make things more complicated than they need to be. Do you really want to remove *all* routes? Look at the pppd man page, and pay attention to the "defaultroute" and "proxyarp" (if you have more than one machine at home) options. PPP can automatically insert a default route to your server when it starts, and remove that route automatically when it stops, if you use the defaultroute option.
