Their installation and operations manual has all the smart mode protocol specs in it. It also gave the cable pin outs(UPS side). It uses DB9 connector to talk to the PC. I have no idea about the pricing. One of the pages also has a note that says If you are writing your own software to interface with the UPS the preferred mode to use is computer mode. I guess they encourage if you want to write your own software.
