Notes about Bill Jolitz's Talk to the SVNET
_________________________________________
Please note that I have modified the "follow-up" line,
as was requested by many. In the future, I will try
to maintain this policy. Also, I would like to
apologize to other newsgroups for my previous
oversight on this matter. Thank You.
PURPOSE
_______
The purpose of these discussions is, of course, to
amplify the comments by Bill Jolitz and others in the UNIX
community that would like to see some changes in the *BSD
system, as we know it now. As always, we are hoping for
improvements so that theory and application find a happy
medium. Please remember though that 386bsd is an
*experimental Operating System*.
THEME
_____
The theme of these discussions are to explore the
concepts that Bill has brought to light in his recent
remarks to the SVNET. It should be noted that not all
the ideas or "bullets" that will be mentioned are Bill's.
Bill is simply a messenger and we should not castrate him
because of past (or possible future) differences.
What are the ideas?
___________________
In Bill's opening remarks to the SVNET he presented a
overhead slide that highlighted so issues concerning
"usability". In fact, Bill's slide was labeled
"Challenge:usability". What are those issues?
Here are the "bullets":
o Dynamic configuration (Symbolic, Unordered, Universal)
o Uniform Source Tree and Program Building Environment
o Provision for multiple system environments
o Provision for easy extensibility
o Minimum system management overhead
o Extended Kernel tracing for performance evaluation and
fault isolation
o Role-based security to restrict/interdict intrusion
ORDER
_____
Before you break out your pocket thesaurus -- we should
consider just one of Bill's bullets at a time. Shutter I
should ask someone to decide the order; as such, we'll take
these items in order. Breaking order will only confuse
issues, so my recommendation is one idea at a time.
This is not to say that the other ideas might not have
validity to their predecessors, it is just that when we
return to these ideas -later- one might be confused as to
what is what.
