Indeed.  There's a quantum effect working here.  J. Random Cloner is
definitely going to have the resources to reverse-engineer the
product, whereas J. Random Programmer isn't.  So the product is not
going to have the software it needs to work with it (unless the
manufacturer writes all the software anyone needs for any reason).
