Since we are unfunded, we rely on donations from other sources. We were recently given two tahoe-based machines running 4.3BSD (the machines were a donation from the Computer Lab. in Trinity and from ICL). Although the machines are not exactly state-of-the-art, they are better and more stable than what we already have. The machines also have (I believe) all the requisite licenses. However, the version of BSD they are running is not exactly what we want - it has no NFS, etc... So we have decided to upgrade to a better OS. Since the only better OS I could find (one that was `free' - our group can't afford to buy tapes) is Net2, I decided to download this. However, upon downloading it (from src.doc.ic.ac.uk - an ftp site in England), I've found that some of the files from the sys/tahoe directory and it's subdirectories are missing - namely files such as locore.s and so on. These files are mentioned in the files.tahoe list. Most of the other files are there - it's just a few files from the VAX and Tahoe distributions that are missing (I think - I haven't checked out the rest of the sys directory fully). Now since the machines that have been donated to us actually have the original 4.3BSD unix on them, these files are in the old sources that came with this. However, I can only assume that these files will have changed somehow in the Net2 version (certainly their location in the source tree has changed, but a quick perusal with `diff' on common files between the two versions shows that most changes are in the comments at the head of the file). So my questions are (you can probably see this coming): 0) Was the tahoe port of net2 ever completed? This would eliminate a lot of hassle, but cause us some grief if it wasn't. If it wasn't officially completed, do you know of anyone who wrote their own port? 1) If the source tree at src.doc.ic.ac.uk doesn't have the required files, where can I (freely) download them from? i.e. what site has the COMPLETE source tree, and not just most of it. 2) If I can't freely download them, who can I contact about this further (there is no maintainer mentioned in the source tree), particularly with respect to a possible donation to our group of the required tapes or possibly a temporary ftp account from which the full source can be downloaded. 3) Failing all of the above, where can I get information about modifying the files in the old 4.3BSD already on the system to work with the net Net2 release? Thanks for your attention. Hope someone can help! Laters, Robert. -- Robert Walsh \ Inexplicably, Georges porcupine goes flat. Systems and Software Eng. Ltd., \ My opinions are my own.
