I routinely use an 3c503 (an *ancient 8-bit ethernet card) on a 386sx at 16mhz with a NFS read and write block size of 8k... never had an NFS problem. [Now, I have _other_ problems, related to the fact that this is an extremely slow machine, doing gigantic nightly builds (which take over 10 hours...), with all sources and objects living on NFS mounted directories.] I'd be interested to learn your hardware setup, particularly if you have a 3c509... - Dave Rivers - -- Imagine Whirled Peas.
