MacBSD is an extremely interesting hobby/toy. It does not have A/UX's MAS
environment yet, ( although the PowerOpen/MAS white paper calls for
running the Mac desktop in an X window like Liken, MAE before it which
seems a bit less than elegant to me), and there is much else which is
missing at this point. That is not to say that the developers did not do
good work, they should be highly praised. But even they are aware of the
limitations of their 'thesis/project' and it seems like most have now
moved on to other things. Their kernel is based on NetBSD or BSD4.4 the
last release, maybe it would have been better to base on something which
continues on beyond the end of the BSD project, such as the GNU Hurd kernel
from M.I.T. or the Linus kernel (Linus). Consider it from a commercial
support point of view: public domain projects such as GNU and Linux have
HUGE followings of commercial and individual entities who care about
whether they continue or not. Albeit, the Intel architecture is an AWFUL
one to work with at the assembly language/driver level compared with
Motorola machines but there are alot more of them out there. And Apple
machines have many quirks when compared to Amigas or Intel based PCs in
terms of trying to get things done. I myself am interesting in working
on MacBSD, but I wonder how realistic it may be to hope it would soon
spring into a full feature laden competitor with A/UX or the inelegant
AIX/MAS integration.
